Fragments of Radical Thought: Paradigms and the Power Structure Apparatus

What Actually Happened in the History of Anthropology?        In the myth-cum-history that legitimates anthropology, there are revolutions which mark time’s passage and posts which mark the significant places we all hope to have passed. I argue the radical shift from 19 th century thinkers to contemporary cultural anthropologists occurred as a reaction to the evolutionist-models only insofar as they entertained ideas deemed “dangerous” to the social order. The ideas of   The Structure of Scientific Revolutions   will be employed to illustrate the reaction of 20 th   century anthropologist as a reflection of a larger, collective social response.        All of us are born into a “tribal mentality” of various forms. These include our family unit, religious background, country of origin, ethnicity, etc.   The tribal mentality effectively indoctrinates an individual into the tribe’s beliefs, ensuring that all believ...

Let's Talk About "Butt Stuff"

On Identity and Rectal Screening in MSM  I mean if folx are asking about the ass and no one is willing to talk about it, then imagine the needs of those who do not talk about "butt stuff"...For example, those who engage is sexual practices like anal receptive sex but do not identify or do not disclosure their identity as gay, bi, or MSM. They are unlikely to talk about their asses in a clinical setting, and therefore unlikely to be offered prevention or treatment.  A recent STI treatment experience once again reinforced the need to call attention to the lack of discussion about "butt stuff" among men who have sex with men (MSM), notwithstanding their identities. There is little focus on the needs of sexual minorities and the health issues associated with particular practices and sexual identities are even less established among relevant stakeholders; and for me, as a Bottom, I am particular bothered by the lack of care I receive from medical professionals in a varie...

Greater Hampton Roads Ryan White Planning Council

Membership Application Essay There was an additional page, but its content is elsewhere in this blog.  Setting:   I was invited to apply for a board member position with the Greater Hampton Roads HIV Health Services Planning Council, seemingly after I began publicly (visible on social media) working with the Virginia Dept. of Health on policy analysis and legislative issues; and I, of course, accepted the opportunity with joy and humility.  ¿ But, who do they want?  Context:    There is truly only the multiplicity to describe me, with some folks aware of this or that aspect, and others both and neither; the myriads of form always follow a specific function. So, when I am here, then, I am not there; and thus, as long as volition is my own, I place myself in whatever configuration is most immediately desired . Hence, the risk of Being comfortable is always already measured against the troubled happenstance of reconciling contradictions ; which ...

Surveillance: A Story About MHS to CDR: A Story from Virginia's Molecular HIV Surveillance Program's Founding Mother

Introduction This is an ethnographic record of the founding of Molecular HIV Surveillance (MHS), Rapid Cluster Detection and Response program of **Department of Health, written as an email reply to my initial correspondence, which I have also included for reference. The author happens to be an old friend of mine, whom I did not know was responsible for the development of this program; but after learning about her integral role in operationalizing the call to action by CDC, I reached out immediately. Our historical relationship afforded me an opportunity to be more familiar about the issue and inquires I have about MHS, which prompted the following narrative. From the source email: I did the  outreach to laboratories  to try to get them to voluntarily submit the genotypes to us (since they weren’t legally reportable yet so, technically, they did not have to send us anything).  We had legislation working its way through  so we knew (and hoped) it would just be a ma...

How I almost succumbed to AIDS: STIGMA and HIV Criminalization Laws

My Story The following text is from a story I shared during community development events to cultivate a donorship for the nonprofit organization where I once worked. I hope that by reading this deeply personal account, you will empathize the unique situation in which those living with HIV find themselves; especially, considering the power of fear and stigma, shame, and self-denial to steal the hearts and minds of all of us when we first learn of an HIV diagnosis.  In imagining the emotionality and contextuality of my story, brainstorm ways to show your support as an ally of stigma-reduction and HIV decriminalization; and then write a letter from your own perspective to legislators before this Monday's (2/1/20) Virginia Senate hearing. If you are reading this past the time to advocate for Senate Bill 1138, then consider ways in which you have (re)produced HIV-related stigma in the world and how you might unlearn those ideas and ideals as a function of your solidarity with ...

My Public Statement on HIV Decriminalization in Support of SB 1183

My Public Comments on SB 1183: Repeal of HIV Criminalization Laws  https://lis.virginia.gov/cgi-bin/legp604.exe?211+sum+SB1138 SUMMARY AS INTRODUCED: Sexually transmitted infections; infected sexual battery; repeal.  Repeals the crime of infected sexual battery. The bill also repeals the crime of donating or selling blood, body fluids, organs, and tissues by persons infected with human immunodeficiency virus and the provisions regarding the testing of certain persons for human immunodeficiency virus or hepatitis B or C viruses. The bill contains technical amendments. The criminalization of HIV transmission, exposure and non-disclosure has become a critical preventive strategy to end the HIV epidemic, target interventions to reduce HIV-specific health disparities, ameliorate the effects of stigma and racial inequity in VA law, and thus advance the interests of public health, the Commonwealth   targeted interventions in public health aimed at reducing stigma and racial ineq...

Mercury's Toxic Touch: Public Health Crises in the Amazon Linked to Illegal Gold Mining

Presentation Summary My presentation was on mercury poisoning in indigenous communities of the Peruvian Amazon caused by illegal goldmining activities. The article was posted on October 02, 2020 on the Anthropology News website, published by the American Anthropological Association. I often use this source for finding current issues in public health considered in anthropological contexts, which of course is my own background. The article reviews the history of mercury toxicity in the region and describes the population health outcomes for native peoples making a home of this now poisoned environment.   Mercury is an environmental pollutant that can travel far from its emission source, where it can damage human health and the environment. Artisanal and Small Scale Gold Mining (ASGM) is estimated to be the largest source of global mercury emissions, and occurs in the context of power, race, and gender dynamics in mining communities; as well as a long history of encultured racism ...
